Man shot dead after charging at police with knife in Footscray

A man has been shot dead by police after allegedly charging at officers with a knife outside a shopping centre in Melbourne’s inner west.
Police were called to Footscray Plaza about 9pm on Thursday following reports of a man armed with a knife. When officers arrived and instructed him to drop the weapon, he allegedly ran at two officers, prompting both to open fire, police said.
The man, who is yet to be formally identified, was treated by paramedics but died at the scene in Albert Street.
The incident is now under investigation by homicide squad detectives, with oversight from Victoria Police’s internal discipline unit, the Professional Standards Command.
