Investigators have spoken with some members of the victims’ family and party guests, but are pursuing several people who left after the stabbings.

“These people know who they are,” Stevenson said. “Don’t drag this out. It’s not good for anyone.”

The number of attackers and weapons are still unknown, but Stevenson said about 20 people attended the gathering and police believe all parties were known to each other.

Observatory Street resident Sanjeeta Sharma was returning home from a walk on Thursday when she heard shouting and saw the two victims sprawled on the street.

“One person was face down onto the ground,” said Sharma, who also saw a group of young girls around one man’s body.

“We saw something … on the road as well. In the dark, we could not really recognise whether it was blood or it was water, some sort of thing was there, so we have to step over it.”

About a minute later, Sharma said, emergency services arrived.

The area was normally peaceful, she said. “It’s a bit scary, this happening on our street.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident, with dashcam/CCTV footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
