There’s an early turn-up – Paula Badosa is hurtling towards an upset, capturing the opening set 7-5 against the tournament’s No.3 seed Coco Gauff.

Badosa, the 11th seed, trailed on serve for the first 45 minutes of the match, but then broke at 5-5 and held her own serve to forge ahead in this best-of-three-set quarter-final.

She has also delivered a worthy entry for one of the points of the tournament. At 30-30 and 5-5, Badosa closed out a brutal rally with a deft volley.

The Spaniard’s late flurry in the first set also silenced the large contingent of American fans on Rod Laver Arena.

Badosa’s forehand has been a weapon, finding the corners of the court as she grabbed the vital break. Surprisingly, her serve has not been as reliable as her opponent’s – Badosa is getting just 51 per cent of her first serves in, while Gauff is a little better up, at 66 per cent.

Gauff was visibly upset as Badosa brought up set point, slapping her leg and letting out a frustrated “come on”.

The young American slumped her shoulders and dragged herself to her bench after she sent the ball over the baseline to give Badosa the first set in 50 minutes.

Gauff is definitely not out of this match as there is not much between these two players today.

They’re both returning well and hitting big forehands.
