Carlton look too good but the biggest roars of the first quarter arrived when Sam Lalor entered the action. The No.1 pick began the quarter evading two opposition tackles and then ended the quarter with a flying mark on the wing, which led to the Tigers’ first goal via their skipper Toby Nankervis. Unfortunately for Tiger fans, the scoreboard is as in favour of the Blues as was expected with their lead 27 points at the first break. They were cleaner than their opponents and broke through the Tigers’ defence easily. The challenge for Richmond is to forget the scoreboard and keep playing the game sensibly, attacking when the option is available and defending without going into their shell.

First quarter thoughts
QT: Carlton sizzling at the MCG
It’s shaping as a badly lopsided clash, even though the Tigers are playing with pluck.
QT: Carlton 5.4 (34) lead Richmond 1.1 (7)
Watch: Carlton’s second goal
Goal: New Blue on the board
Francis Evans gets one for Carlton. He’s the club fifth goal-kicker and we haven’t hit quarter-time.

Phew .… Tigers find a major
Club stalwart Toby Nankervis gets the job done. He looks relieved. His teammates are relieved. The hordes of yellow and black at the Punt Road end are relieved. Richmond have their first goal of the season.
The clock is ticking towards the 26-minute mark.
Goal: Zac Williams off the ground …
Another goal to Carlton, their fourth, and the margin is blowing out.
This one was slightly fortuitous. Williams scrambled one forward and it bounced through. Four goals to zip well into time-on at the ’G.
Carlton 4.4 (28) lead Richmond 0.1 (1) after 22 minutes
Goal: Kemp for Carlton
Carlton’s “third tall” Brodie Kemp is on the board with the Blues’ third goal after 21 minutes.
There’s no Charlie Curnow for the Blues tonight, so it’s a golden chance for Kemp to have a greater impact.
Goal: Blues find their second, edge ahead
A great set shot goal from close to the 50-metre arc from Matthew Cottrell.
It’s hard to see the Blues giving up the lead from here ….
An early thought
The Tigers effort is first class, but it will need to be because the signs are already worrying with the gap between the two teams is obvious.
