Melbourne defender Steven May admits his side faced a stern review from their coaches this week as they look to end their poor loss to Gold Coast last round.

“Certainly, our effort and ability to execute our method wasn’t up to the level,” May told Fox Footy.

“It’s not something Goody [Simon Goodwin] has had to coach us a lot on in the last few years as we’ve been consistent in that area but we had a very strong review, one we deserved, and we are looking to respond tonight.”

May added that fellow defender Jake Lever was close to returning but needs more time

“He’s the sort of guy who leaves it up to the last minute [to try and proof his fitness,” May told Fox Footy.

“There is no point rushing him back. Let’s get him right, we have a long year ahead of us.”
